What is “Sabbath Economics?”

Sabbath Economics is a Biblical economic model championed by Christian author and teacher Ched Myers.  The model is an application of the economic aspects of the Biblical Sabbath to modern socioeconomics.  In the introduction of his book, The Biblical Vision of Sabbath Economics, Myers states, "God's people are instructed to dismantle, on a regular basis, the fundamental patterns and structures of stratified wealth and power, so that there is 'enough for everyone.' " This statement contains two of the core principles of Myer's socioeconomic vision:

1) The focus on voluntary redistribution of wealth and community sharing

2) A foundation based on God's abundance as opposed to scarcity in other modern economic models.

The Biblical concepts from which Sabbath economics draws are:

  • The Sabbath day, particularly during the journey through the wilderness as described in Exodus 15-17
  • The Sabbath year, described in Exodus 23, where the land was not cultivated, and slaves were released every seventh year
  • The Year of Jubilee, every 50th year - the "Sabbath of Sabbaths" - when all debts were cancelled, and all property returned to the original owners

About Ched Myers

Ched, a fifth generation Californian, lives in a small intentional community in Oak View, CA, an hour and a half north of Los Angeles. Over the past three decades he has worked with many faith-based peace and justice organizations and movements. Today with Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries he focuses on building capacity for biblical literacy, church renewal and faith-based witness for justice.

Ched holds a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley (1978) and an M.A. in New Testament Studies from the Graduate Theological Union (1984). He has served as adjunct faculty at Memphis Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary and Claremont School of Theology (where he was the 1998-99 Fellow in Urban Theology).

Ched’s most recent book, co-authored with Elaine Enns, is entitled Ambassadors of Reconciliation: New Testament Reflections on Restorative Justice and Peacemaking (Vol I) and Divers Christian Practices of Restorative Justice and Peacemaking (Vol II), to be published by Orbis Books in 2009. His landmark Binding the Strong Man: A Political Reading of Mark’s Story of Jesus (1988) was reissued in a 20th anniversary edition in 2008 by Orbis. His other books include The Biblical Vision of Sabbath Economics (Tell the Word Press, 2001); Who Will Roll Away the Stone: Discipleship Queries for First World Christians (Orbis, 1994); and Say to This Mountain: Mark’s Story of Discipleship (Orbis, 1996, co-authored).

Ched travels throughout North America and abroad giving seminars and retreats, teaching, preaching and facilitating gatherings. He works with local churches, diocesan/denominational offices, and faith-based organizations. He is particularly committed to faith-based peace and justice efforts such as Christian Peacemaker Teams, Borderlinks, the Catholic Worker movement, Witness for Peace, and the Servant Leadership Schools.
